Wobbly Horse was created by Dr Monica Berntsen, who is a neuropsychologist and cognitive neuroscientist with a love and passion for horses. Her horse Hugo has had a challenging journey with chronic lameness due to navicular syndrome. She tested and tried a great number of products and interventions on the market that promises to help in various ways, and as a scientist, naturally looks for evidence to quantify benefits. For many equine interventions, applications are theory driven rather than evidence based.

Wobbly Horse aims to help other people with a passion for horses to navigate the vast market of interventions and products, share ideas about what could work and deliver equine training products that can facilitate horses wellness and performance while engaging their natural curiosity for learning about their balance and movement. Hugo certainly seems to enjoy learning about his control of his body and balance, and once he has learned a new way to move, he is much like a toddler – loving to show it off.

Our Journey: Wobble boards are not novel. People use them all over the world, but there are not many that produce and deliver them. As far as we know, nobody else that makes them in the UK. We have also taken the wobble board idea forwards to create a novel wobble board that moves in two directions, not just the traditional forwards-backwards. The use of wobble cushions or balancing boards are frequently used in physiotherapy for dogs and humans, and while all the equine professionals we have spoken with would love to be able to use these things with their clients’ horses – there just arent anything made for horses. We therefore made it our mission to make similar functional tools that can aid in horse’s balance and strength, which can aid in rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
